An excellent description of the Soviet School (sic) of chess.
Minus all the bogus ideological constructs, the USSR simply had a much larger, better-organized and state-supported chess scene, starting from the youth cadres and continuing through adulthood. Investment over time in schooling and professional development was what brought success in the sport (or art, or game, whatever you want to call it).
