My Chess Geek Garret-Cave-Attic

Back in May Wang posted a couple of pictures of his Geek Cave; here I present my Geek Attic, or perhaps it's an old fashioned garret. Anyway, to get some of the solitude needed for serious chess study with a board, rather than a monitor, I cleared out a little space in the storage area of the condo loft. I then hauled a big-ass table up five flights of stairs and by a miracle of engineering genius, through the pint-sized door.

I share the space with my son's art studio.

A portion of the chess library.

On the board, a game I was playing over--the final position of a fifteen-move crushing of the late Darcy Robinson. To give Darcy credit, this was when he was still an "improving adult player." A few years later he defeated me 2.5-1.5 in another match, and made it to 1800 before he suddenly passed a few months ago.

In memoriam, I'll publish a win of his soon...for now, here's an Open Game where Black gets all the fun!

I gotta get me a Chess Cave or something. Right now I either use my normal computer desk or the chair and ottoman in the living room. (which is too close to my cat!)

Forget tactics I need a chess cave/den!!

In all seriousness, I like your den!

Looks nice and to not let anybody see the mess you just have to close the door. Brilliant place to study chess!

very nice chess cave....i thought i had a ton of chess books, you have a couple of tons there...doesn't make it easy reading them all....problem is when it comes to dusting them. if i cleaned out a closet, i can have a chess cave as well, as long as my kids don't find it and convert it into something else. great selection in your chess books too.

@Tommy--yeah, you only need a cave if you have a kid...or a cat. If you just have a wife, she should leave you alone for reasonable periods at your desk, else it may be time for a change.

@chesstiger--and the great thing is while you study chess you don't notice all junk, either!

@anon--and that's only a part of the chess books, I need to photograph the whole lot!

@chessx--great, kids leaving home, some quiet time. Only 14 more years for me...

@Derek--Yessss, I read that post sometime ago and if I hit the jackpot...

@Wang--For a long time I collected chess books, didn't but them just to study them. I need to post a few of the rare/valuable/unusual ones.

In the photo of your shelves I spotted a hardback copy of Brady's Bobby Fischer: Profile of a Prodigy among quite a few other gems. There's no question you're a chess bibliophile! It's nice to have a space dedicated to such passions.
